Doubles Strategy




1) The strongest position in doubles is both players inside the service line. The 2nd strongest is both players deep. The weakest formation is one up and one back.
2) Do not allow lobs too deep behind you.
3) When defending, one player covers the alley, the other covers the middle.
4) Teammates must move together and keep the same distance apart.
5) When opponents have position at mid-court, the best shot is low and between them.
6) Hit up to the deep player, hit down at the closest.
7) Serve wide, next shot up the middle, serve up the middle, next shot wide.
8) Always follow a drop shot with a lob.
9) Always lob an opponent too close to the net.
10) Move to the mid-court after a successful lob.
11) When returning a ball that either partner can hit, always defer to the forehand.
12) When you have been pulled wide, you r partner should be in the center. Your shot is between your opponents.
13) Do not poach in front of your partner if they can make the shot.


14) The stronger player should play the ad court.
15) When opponents have one player at mid-court and one player at the baseline, hit to baseline player.
16) If opponent are too strong, play ... from the baseline both players.
17) If opponents attack weak player at net, move player to baseline.
18) In doubles there are always 3 openings, a team can only cover 2 of them. The secret to winning is to find the open area. 
19) Best player serves first.
20) Give your partner helpful tips (opponents in left  ..., serves partner is too close to net)
21) Where ponet ends, make a mental picture and see if any ...is of of position and if you .... made the best shot selection. 
22) When partner crosses in front of or behind, other partner switches to cover open court.
23) When poaching, don't move until opponent starts to move racket.
24) If opponent is to deep, hit at their fee. If opponent is too close, lob over their head. If opponent is ... close to middle hit up alley, if too close to alley hit up middle. 



 
25) Doubles shots - cross- court, down the line, up the middle, deep, short.
26) Every shot sets up the next shot
27) Do not allow deep lobs to fence, volley deep lobs before they bounce
28)When you are playing chess and not just hitting balls, you are playing real doubles.
29) You must know what shot sequence your partner is playing, and they must know your shot sequence. 
30) It is acceptable to hit the ball out. It is not acceptable to hit the ball into the net.
31) When hitting at opponent in front of you, "..." to :..." left, right, at there feet or over their head, ovoid hitting directly at them.
32) Always hit to openings.
33) Always face forward. Do not turn to see what your partner is doing.
